We will be conducting our Mock Constitutional Convention Monday - Weds. During the convention you will be re-creating what our Founding Fathers did while debating what should be included in our Constution. We will learn about the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan and decide upon the Great Compromise. We will also have a debate on who should be included as part of our population - henceforth the 3/5ths Clause. It should call for a very interesting week.

Our next summative will be on Feb. 7th. It will include the Articles of Confederation, Land Ordinance of 1785, Northwest Ordinance of 1787, Shays' Rebellion, The United States Constitution, Federalists and Anti-Federalists, and the Bill of Rights.

I hope you had the chance to watch the Public Swearing in Ceremony of President Obama on this very momentious holiday; Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We will be discussing President Obama's Inaugural Address and make connections to what we have learned about our American heritage.

This week will be our practice OAA week. Our schedule is going to be a little different from our normal school week. I am not going to list our agenda by the day, but for the week, because I will not see all of you every day. We will be having our Mock Constitutional Convention next week. You will be making the very same decisions as our Founding Fathers did when they created our Constitution.

We will be viewing the movie Roots Episode I and II by Alex Haley throughout the week. This is our introduction to our slavery unit. We will continue this unit into 2013. Students who will not be watching the video will have an alternative assignment. This assignment is a simultion of taking the role as a fugitive in "The Fugitive's Path to Freedom". Students who are participating in the alternative assignment will journal their experiences and the decisions they make on their path to freedom. Students will also keep track of their points and determine their outcome based upon their score. This will be graded as a formative assignment. Students who are viewing the video will complete a viewing guide for each day and it will be collected as a formative grade worth 40pts. Each day's assignment will be collected the following day. We will be having our Boston Massacre Mock Trial this week. Students will be attorneys, defendants, witnesses, and jurors during our mock trial. This will give students a better understanding of what took place during the Boston Massacre and decide for themselves if the soldiers were innocent or guilty of murdering 5 individuals in front of the Custom's House. A sixth victim died 10 years later. Would he be one of the murdered? These are questions you will have to answer. We are wrapping up our unit on Exploration, European Colonization, and 13 Colonies. Our summative will be on Oct. 11th. It will consist of 40 MC and 1 ER for a total of 50 points. 25 pt. Summative Colonial Advertising Project is due Oct. 9th. Most of your work needs to be completed outside of class time. This is an individual project.

We are beginning our week by celebrating Constitution Day. On September 17, 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed by thirty-nine brave men who changed the course of history. We will begin our Exploration / Colonization Unit this week. We will being reading Ch. 3 from our American Nation Textbook. Our summative will be on October 11th.

Washington DC Information
Students have selected their partners and roommates. We are now moving onto the next phase of our trip. Students are to return their Veteran's Form by Tues., Sept. 18th. Students are to turn into Mrs. Tyrrell their relatives who are Veterans on the Veteran Form. Please include their Military Division, Rank, Years of Service, Awards, how they are related to the student, and any other pertinent information. During our Wreath Laying Ceremony in DC we will announce all Veteran's names along with all of the information provided.
DC Parent Informational Meeting will be held on Sept. 27th at 7 PM at Harmon Middle School. Please plan to attend. This is a very important meeting for parents to attend. Students are asked not to attend. We will cover the same information with the students during their Social Studies classes.

The Republican National Convention is being held in Tampa, Florida this week. Due to Tropical Storm Isaac, the opening day has been postponed until Tuesday. Take a look at Behind the Scenes of the 2012 National Republican Convention a GOPConvention2012.com.
